Rushing in to get this present I dropped my favorite older doll and her head broke into pieces - and I was horrified when my Mom said "It doesn't matter - you have a new bigger doll!" This picture of Mary's mom Hazel, was taken in 1943. She was only 38 yrs. old.

Her life was difficult, and it can be seen in her face. A divorced woman, with an 8 year old child living on a small farm with her parents during the second world war. Hazel worked a 12 hour day, and had a day off every two weeks. Her commute was about a 30 mile round trip on country roads. She would have to shovel out a winding driveway whenever it snowed.

2 years old

and striking a bargain with the ice cream vendor

8th birthday party with my friends Kitty and Joan. The white tubes we are holding were parachute launchers. We would put a flimsy silk parachute with an attached cardboard soldier into the tube and aim it skyward and BLOW!

It worked real well until the tube got soggy from saliva...
